A catastrophic toll
And unfortunately, the toll is expected to rise, as rescuers continue their search and, given the devastation caused by this disaster, other bodies are likely to be discovered under the rubble, or even in the water.
Impressive figures
This tragedy recalls the floods that killed 300 people in October 1973 in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the countless human losses, an entire region was devastated, with destroyed roads, wrecked and piled-up cars, and numerous power outages.
Three Days of National Mourning
Faced with such a tragedy, the Spanish government has declared a three-day period of national mourning. While weather conditions have improved significantly, further rain is expected in the coming days, which is not reassuring for the region's residents.
Red Alert
: The northern Valencia region is on red alert this Thursday. The infamous cold snap responsible for this severe weather is moving toward southern Portugal, but very slowly. Thus, thunderstorms and heavy rain are still expected.
