Who knew a simple coin could replace expensive glass-cutting tools? A retired glassmaker revealed this trick to me! With just a few everyday items, you can transform old bottles into beautiful glasses, vases, or decorations. Skeptical? Wait until you discover this simple, inexpensive, and accessible method!
A simple and ingenious method
It's often thought that cutting glass requires specialized equipment, but this technique proves otherwise. Here's what you'll need:
- A clean glass bottle
- A coin
- A cutter
- Hot and cold water
- Sandpaper
The secret lies in using the coin as a guide to achieve a clean, precise cut.
Steps to cut a bottle easily
-
Draw the cutting line
Place the piece against the bottle and use it as a guide for your cutter. Make several passes to thoroughly score the glass. Make sure the line is even to avoid uneven breaks.
-
Create a thermal shock
- Submerge the bottle in very hot water for about 3 to 5 minutes. This allows the glass to expand slightly.
- Immediately afterward, immerse it in ice water. The thermal shock will cause a clean break along the traced line.
-
Separate the pieces
If the break does not occur immediately, repeat the process once or twice until the glass breaks naturally.
