Step 1: Prepare apples
Peel and slice: Start by peeling the apples and slicing them into thin slices. Try to keep the slices as even as possible to ensure even baking. Thin slices also make it easier for them to cook through in the puff pastry.
Toss with sugar and cinnamon: In a mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with the sugar and cinnamon. Adjust the amount of sugar and cinnamon to suit your taste. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, you can add a little more sugar.
Step 2: Prepare the Puff Pastry
Roll out the puff pastry: If you are using frozen puff pastry, make sure to thaw it according to the package directions. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a thin, rectangular sheet. Aim for about 1/4 inch thick, and make sure it is even all the way around.
Cut into strips: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into long strips about 2-3 inches wide. These strips will be wrapped around the apple slices, creating the delicious twists.
Step 3: Put the twists together
Place apples on the dough strips: Place the apple slices lengthwise on the puff pastry strip, overlapping slightly. The apples should cover about half of the strip, leaving the other half folded over.
Fold and turn: Fold the other half of the puff pastry strip over the apples and press down gently to seal the edges. After folding, gently twist each strip to create a spiral shape. Don't worry if a few apple slices peek out; this adds to the rustic look of the dish.
Step 4: Egg wash and fry
Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Brush with egg: In a small bowl, whisk the egg and lightly brush the top of each puff pastry roll. This will give the pastry a golden, shiny finish when baked.
Bake: Place the spirals on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them as they will rise. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
Step 5: Dust and serve
Let cool and dust with powdered sugar: When the twists are perfectly baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. After they have cooled, you can dust them generously with powdered sugar for the finishing touch.
Serve warm: These apple and cinnamon puff pastry rolls taste best warm, straight from the oven, when the puff pastry is still crispy and the apples are soft.Apple Cinnamon Puff Pastry Rolls are a delicious dessert that combines the warmth of cinnamon with the natural sweetness of apples, all wrapped in flaky, buttery puff pastry.
